Next month, we will be celebrating Leeds Learning Disability Week 2024. It will run from Monday 17th June to Sunday 23rd June. For that week, we will be running our own events and co-organising and attending others.

Our Asking You!, CHANGE and Leep1 teams will be out and about at events across Leeds. Here is a list of where you will see them:

Picnic in the Park

  • Date: Monday 17th June
  • Time: 11am-2pm
  • Location: Temple Newsam Park, Temple Newsam Road, Leeds LS15 0AE
  • What is it all about: This is a big picnic, organised by Aspire CBS. It is free to attend and has info stalls, live entertainment and the winners of this year’s Aspire’s Got Talent Award

People’s Parliament: Council Chamber Takeover

  • Date: Tuesday 18th June
  • Time: 10am-12 Noon
  • Location: Leeds Civic Hall, Calverley Street, Leeds LS1 1UR
  • What is it all about: This is where the Leeds Learning Disability People’s Parliament get to visit the Council Chambers, speaking to local councillors about how Leeds can be a better place for adults with a learning disability

Learning Disability Pride March

  • Date: Tuesday 18th June
  • Time: 12:15pm
  • Location: It starts in Millennium Square, outside the Leeds Civic Hall. It will go from there to Kirkgate Market
  • What is it all about: The march is to celebrate pride in having a learning disability. Its theme is “Be Proud – Be Seen”

Being Social information event

  • Date: Tuesday 18th June
  • Time: 11am-3pm
  • Location: Kirkgate Market Leeds LS2 7HY – inside the Market Kitchen area
  • What is it all about: An event with information stalls for over 30 different organisations. They will have information on different activities for people with a learning disability

Leep1’s Friendship Group

  • Date: Wednesday 19th June
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • Location: Café Leep, Unity Business Centre, 26 Roundhay Road, Leeds LS7 1AB
  • What is it all about: A free group run by and for adults with a learning disability in Leeds. They do all kinds of different activities every Wednesday evening, including games and watching films

Leep1’s Club Night

  • Date: Thursday 20th June
  • Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm
  • Location: Popworld, 43 Cookridge Street, Leeds LS2 3AW
  • What is it all about: A monthly club night run for adults with a learning disability in Leeds. Most nights have a fancy dress competition, with the best costume winning a prize!
  • Tickets cost £10 on the door, with carers/support going for free

Leep1 Feel Good Friday Group

  • Date: Friday 21st June
  • Time: 9:30am-3:30pm
  • Location: Café Leep, Unity Business Centre, 26 Roundhay Road, Leeds LS7 1AB
  • What is it all about: A weekly group where Leep1 members take part in activities like cooking and exercise

Aspire CBS 5-a-side Football Tournament

  • Date: Friday 21st June
  • Time: 10am-2pm
  • Location: Weetwood Sports Park, Leeds LS16 5AU
  • What is it all about: A tournament for adults with a learning disability. It costs £10 to register a team – the deadline to enter is Friday 14th June

Forum Central Learning Disability Awards 2024: Vote for Café Leep and Sapphire!

We will also be attending the Forum Central Learning Disability Awards for 2024, at a big ceremony on Friday 21st June. The awards are on from 7:30pm at the Marriott Hotel in Leeds City Centre and we’re up for a couple of accolades!

Café Leep have been nominated in the Member of the Year category. Sapphire Malcolm, who works for CHANGE and is also involved with Leep1, is up for the Outstanding Contribution prize!
