Purpose of role

Advonet’s Learning Disability Services (Asking You) offer a variety of activities for people with learning disabilities in Leeds.

Advonet have been given funding from Leeds Community Foundation and 100% Digital Leeds. This is to make Leeds digitally inclusive for everyone.

We are looking for volunteers with and without learning disabilities to support and mentor people with learning disabilities to improve their digital skills.

This will help people with learning disabilities to have better access to health services, improve their social lives and employment opportunities.

Duties/activities

You will need to come to training sessions on digital inclusion and digital mentoring when needed.

You will need to work alone with someone with a learning disability or in a support group session when needed.

Key skills/qualities a volunteer needs for this role

You will need to have:

  • Basic digital skills and a willingness to learn new ones.
  • A desire to support people with learning disabilities to get better at their digital skills.
  • The ability to listen to and empower people with a learning disability.

Requirements of role (checks and training)

We will give you all training needed for this role.

We want to support our volunteers to develop and will support your skills.

We will give you this training:

  • Volunteer Induction Training (4 hours)
  • Three one-hour sessions on digital skills topics
  • Learning Disability Awareness Training (2 hours)

After training, we will keep supporting you and give you supervisions where we talk about how your role is going.

You will need to have a DBS check for this role. This will make sure you are able to work with vulnerable people. We will help you complete your DBS check.

We will cover any travel expenses you have for this role. This is things like bus or train tickets to come to sessions.

Time commitment required

After training, you will need to commit to 1-2 hours per week for your volunteering role.
